ABx Group (ASX: ABX) has reported exceptional extraction results from its Deep Leads rare earths project in northern Tasmania, according to new testing conducted by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). Diagnostic leaching tests on a 100kg bulk sample delivered recovery rates exceeding 70% for both dysprosium and terbium, two of the most sought-after heavy rare earth elements.
Crucially, the extractions were achieved at a pH above four, suggesting a gentler, more environmentally benign and cost-effective processing route. This also implies fewer impurities and lower reagent costs.
ABx’s Deep Leads deposit stands out within Australia for its high ionic proportion of these heavy rare earths, with dysprosium and terbium together comprising 4.4% of the total resource, among the highest globally for ionic clay deposits.
Managing director Mark Cooksey underscored the significance of these results, noting that they accelerate ABx’s progression toward producing a mixed rare earth carbonate (MREC). ANSTO is on track to deliver the first MREC sample in Q4 2025 to prospective customers.
