Looking Ahead
UGS is using the world-class mineral system training from BHP to build the foundational datasets needed for explorers to focus on the best opportunities. The next 12 months will see UGS complete assessments on individual components of the mineral system framework, such as architecture mapping, as well as an integration of all components into a statewide prospectivity map for porphyry copper deposits.
Leadership
Dr. Stephanie E. Mills – Section Manager and Senior Geologist, Economic Geology
Stephanie Mills leads the metallic minerals team at UGS. She holds a Ph.D. from Monash University, specializing in copper and gold systems. She worked for major mining companies in global generative exploration for porphyry copper and in the world-class Carlin trend, and is a member of the +3Moz Fourmile gold deposit discovery team. She is a registered Professional Geologist and a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists.
James McVey – Project Geologist
James McVey is the project geologist for UGS’s metallic minerals team. He earned a B.S. in geology from the University of Utah and is pursuing a Professional Master’s in mineral exploration at Colorado School of Mines. His experience spans exploration in Utah and the Great Basin, focusing on carbonate replacement and porphyry copper deposits. James was an exploration geologist for some of Utah’s largest copper deposits prior to joining the Survey and is a registered Professional Geologist.
