On 28 April 2025, Canada’s Liberal Party, led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, won the federal election, establishing a minority government with 168 seats, just short of a majority. The Conservatives secured 144 seats. Carney’s campaign emphasized pro-mining policies, promising faster project permitting, new incentives, and infrastructure funding for the mining sector, objectives that are critical for Canada’s economy amid US tariffs and protectionist rhetoric from President Trump.
The Liberals aim to create energy corridors and streamline permitting processes, particularly for minerals that are essential for clean energy. The proposed First and Last Mile Fund (FLMF) seeks to enhance connectivity between mining projects and supply chains, reducing reliance on imports while boosting domestic job creation.
The Liberals will also be flagging projects of national interest, working in partnership with the provinces and territories of Canada to ensure faster development, and lower taxes and red tape, traditional barriers to the development of such projects.
